What to record, step by step

Fill-up: write down the odometer reading, the amount of fuel, the total price and whether you filled the tank completely.
Cost per mile (or km): divide your total spending (fuel plus services) by the distance driven over the same period.
Fuel economy: only compare two full-tank fill-ups. Add up the fuel from every partial fill between them, then divide the distance by that total. Using a single partial fill gives a wrong number.
Service: log the date, odometer, what was done, and the parts, labour, tax and fees as separate lines. Keep a photo of the receipt.
Reminders: note the next due date or mileage for oil, tyres, inspection and similar jobs, whichever comes first.
Backup: export your records to a file now and then. A dated service history also helps when you sell the car.
